Dear Camino Nuevo Familia,
First and foremost, I thank you for your patience and understanding with the transition back to school this year. Our community has gone above and beyond to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing in the midst of this ongoing global pandemic. We knew that getting everyone tested before returning to school would be an important step, but it is not the only step we must take to keep moving forward.
We remain committed to our plans for an in-person semester. Last year, we implemented and followed safety protocols that continue to help us stay safe this semester, including weekly testing. However, the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant has prompted the California and L.A. County Health Departments to update their guidance on what schools should do if a student tests positive. I wanted to share an overview of those updates with you today as we continue doing all that we can to stay safe together.
If a student tests positive and they are at home, they will continue to follow our usual protocol of isolating and staying home. If they are at school when they test positive, the school will call their parent or guardian to pick them up and once home, they will follow the usual instructions about isolating, engaging in independent study, and tentative return to school date.
Beginning today, students who were exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID will receive a “Notice of Exposure” letter. The biggest change in COVID safety guidance is that these students who were exposed will be tested at school and, if they do not have any symptoms, can remain in school. Only students who have tested positive will have to stay home. The goal of this new strategy is to be able to keep more students in-school and minimize the need for short-term quarantines, which disrupt learning across our community.
I understand that there may be uncertainty or questions you may have about this update, and I want to reassure you that we are following the most up-to-date guidance to keep our community safe. We have many mitigation strategies in place and our in-school transmission is very low. We will continue with weekly testing, have medical masks available at all schools, and continue to prioritize everyone’s safety during this surge. Specific details will be shared by your school and you can reach out to your school Leaders with any questions.
I highly encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. One local resource is the Saban Community Clinic, near our CNCA Dalzell Lance High School. The clinic is offering free COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccines continue to be the safest way to minimize disease severity and transmission. Let’s continue to do what we can to move forward.

Estimadas Familias de Camino Nuevo,
Primeramente, les agradezco su paciencia y comprensión con la transición de regreso a la escuela en este año. Nuestra comunidad está haciendo todo lo mejor posible para garantizar la seguridad y el bienestar de todos durante esta pandemia que sigue en curso. Nosotros sabíamos que pedirles a todos que se hicieran la prueba de COVID antes de regresar a la escuela sería un paso importante, pero no es el único paso que debemos tomar para seguir avanzando.
Nosotros seguimos dedicados a nuestro plan de continuar con el semestre en persona. El año pasado, implementamos y seguimos protocolos de seguridad que continúan ayudándonos a mantenernos seguros en este semestre, incluyendo las pruebas semanales. Sin embargo, el reciente aumento de casos positivos de COVID-19 por la variante Omicron ha llevado a los Departamentos de Salud de California y el Condado de Los Ángeles a actualizar su guía sobre lo que deben hacer las escuelas si un estudiante resulta positivo. Hoy quiero compartir una descripción general de esas actualizaciones con ustedes y asegurarles que continuamos haciendo todo lo posible para mantenernos seguros.
Si un estudiante da positivo y está en casa, continuará siguiendo nuestro protocolo habitual de aislamiento y de quedarse en casa. Si están en la escuela cuando resultan positivo, la escuela llamará a sus padres o tutores para que los recojan y, una vez en casa, seguirán las instrucciones habituales sobre el aislamiento, la participación en estudios independientes y una fecha tentativa de regreso a la escuela.
A partir de hoy, los estudiantes que estuvieron expuestos a alguien que dio positivo por COVID recibirán una carta llamada "Aviso de exposición". El mayor cambio en la guía de seguridad de COVID es que estos estudiantes que estuvieron expuestos serán evaluados en la escuela y, si no tienen ningún síntoma, pueden permanecer en la escuela. Solo los estudiantes que hayan dado positivo tendrán que irse a la casa. El objetivo de esta nueva estrategia es poder mantener a más estudiantes en la escuela y minimizar la necesidad de cuarentena a corto plazo, que interrumpen el aprendizaje en nuestra comunidad.
Yo entiendo que puede sentir incertidumbre o tener preguntas sobre esta actualización, y quiero asegurarles que estamos siguiendo la guía más actualizada para mantener segura a nuestra comunidad. Nosotros contamos con muchas estrategias de mitigación y nuestra transmisión en la escuela es muy baja. Continuaremos con las pruebas semanales, tendremos mascarillas médicas disponibles en todas las escuelas y continuaremos dándole prioridad a la seguridad de todos durante este tiempo. Su plantel compartirá los detalles específicos y puede comunicarse con los líderes de su escuela si tiene alguna pregunta.
Les recomiendo a todos los que sean elegibles que se vacunen. Un recurso local es la Clínica Comunitaria Saban, cerca de nuestra escuela secundaria Dalzell Lance. La clínica ofrece vacunas contra COVID-19 gratuitas. Las vacunas continúan siendo la forma más segura de minimizar la gravedad y la transmisión de la enfermedad. Continuemos haciendo todo lo posible para poder seguir adelante.
