CNCA Celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day

Dear Camino Nuevo Family, 

Today, we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day first proposed by indigenous peoples at a UN conference held 45 years ago. Due in large part to activism led by Native American/Indigenous community organizers the city of Los Angeles officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ day in 2019. At CNCA, we join in the recognition of this day in order to honor the history, culture, resilience and contributions of indigenous people. 

Last year, CNCA joined in the national movement to honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day by giving the day off to all students and staff. This year, we can honor, reflect, and learn both in our classrooms and on our own about the land we stand on and the people it belongs to. We recognize that Camino Nuevo Charter Academy is on Tongva (Gabrieleno) land. The Tongva People have inhabited the 4,000+ square mile region called Tovaangar, known today as the Greater Los Angeles Basin. We also encourage you to learn about the hundreds of indigenous groups in the nations from which our students descend – the indigenous communities of Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and other Central and South American countries. We value the indigenous cultural traditions our families bring to Camino Nuevo and understand that indigenous history is American history.  (Scroll down for teaching resources!)

Querida Familia de CNCA –

Este fin de semana, celebramos el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas, un día propuesto por primera vez por los pueblos indígenas en una conferencia de los Naciones Unidos hace 45 años. Debido en gran parte al activismo liderado por los organizadores de la comunidad nativa/indígena, la ciudad de Los Ángeles reconoció oficialmente el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas en 2019.  En CNCA nos sumamos al reconocimiento de este día para honrar la historia, cultura, resiliencia y contribuciones de los pueblos indígenas.

El año pasado, CNCA se unió al movimiento nacional para honrar el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas dando el día libre a todos los estudiantes y personal. Este año, podemos honrar, reflexionar y aprender tanto en nuestras aulas como por nuestra cuenta sobre la tierra que pisamos y las personas a las que pertenece. Reconocemos que Camino Nuevo Charter Academy está en tierra de Tongva (Gabrieleno). El Pueblo Tongva ha habitado la región de más de 4000 millas cuadradas llamada Tovaangar, conocida hoy como la Gran Cuenca de Los Ángeles. También lo alentamos a aprender sobre los cientos de grupos indígenas en las naciones de que descienden nuestros estudiantes: las comunidades indígenas de México, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, República Dominicana y otros países de América del Sur. Valoramos las tradiciones culturales indígenas que nuestras familias traen a Camino Nuevo y entendemos que la historia indígena es la historia estadounidense.
